They Don't Need More Stripes by Tabbytooner They Don't Need More Stripes by Tabbytooner
A project I did for my writing 2010 class.

This is a repurposing of the paper I wrote, "Animals Behind Bars."

I'd love to get the message across that it is wrong to imprison animals in zoos, aquariums, circuses, and other organizations that merely use the animals for entertainment purposes.

It is not being implied that all zoos are bad. I just don't agree with zoos that imprison wild animals just to gawk and stare at them. (Zoos like THIS:[link])

It breaks my heart :( good news is that Lagoon's popularity keeps going down! Hopefully they'll move the animals to a less stressful environment soon.

itīs so sad...... that poor tiger!
But there are also some zoos which improve the life conditions for animals...
This month I was at a park which had a 10000 mē enclosure for a pack of wolves- it was more like a fenced forest!

Yes, it's located behind everything in a ride called "The Wild Kingdom Train." The animals are confined in tiny cages and they are severely depressed. The smoke from the train effects the animals air quality, and the noises from the train and nearby rides frighten them. Here's a link that provides more information. [link]

Ohhh ok I remember it now. I dont understand the point of having it there. the train goes by so fast you dont even have time to enjoy viewing the animals. I didnt even think about those things that would effect themD: I feel like I need to do something about it now. I will probably go over the summer....hmmm

The link provides quite poor information, citing boulevard press.
The things mentioned may be true for some zoos, but there are a lot of good zoos, too.

Oh, anyway what the purpose of the art is. I liked it anyway from how you made it. - And it's always good to fight for ones opinion :).
That being said, I was reading comments and I saw your post to ~SophistaSchattenherz below "Here is a pretty interesting site you should check out to see where I am coming from: [link]". That's the link I ment.

I must agree; the most ideal thing would be to have larger zoos with fewer animals, perhaps only focusing on one general category of creatures to ensure that they'd have a healthy space to roam in.

Unfortunately, lots of zoos just love to cram in as much species as they can find into small spaces.

not all zoos are bad... I think it's ok to keep animals in big terrains to save them from extinction.
What I hate are "delphinarium" (i don't know the english word for it). Water mammals can't be holden in tanks. No Tank is big enough for them.
But I think keep fishes at home is ok, because you have to shape the landscape in your tank, that the landscape in your tank looks like the landscape in the natural territory (google "aqua scaping") And it's a rule, that you must have a aquarium, that's big enough for the fishs (min.: 1cm fish = 1l water)
I know many of people, like you, who complain about something, but don't have any idea what they are complaining about.
Google "aquaristic" and read about this.

This piece is based on a paper I wrote. I understand all my facts, and I understand that some zoos are a good place for rehabilitation. And "aquarium" is the word you are looking for, and yes, there is no tank that can compensate for the ocean. :)

Here is a pretty interesting site you should check out to see where I am coming from: [link]

I know there are many great places that hold animals for good reason and release them, but keeping them confined in a cage for their whole life is not okay, especially in small zoos in amusement parks.

While I do agree that using animals purely for entertainment is bad, many zoos and aquariums are actually working quite hard on conservation efforts. Furthermore, I do believe that public education is an important first step in conservation. I work with non-releasable raptors, and you'd be surprised how many people approach us after presentations and tell us things to the effect of, "I used to hate them and think they were pests, and then I saw one up close and learned about them and now I think they're really cool and deserve to be protected." I do, however, believe that all zoos and aquariums should be accredited by a national organization such as the AZA, which ensures a high standard of animal care and quality of enclosures.

I agree. I appreciate the educational value of it if it is not being abused. I support organizations such as Monterey Bay Aquarium, who collect injured or orphaned animals for rehabilitation, use tanks that use water directly from the bay, and then release the animals once they are healthy enough to live on their own. :)

Definitely! I've only been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium once, but it was quite beautiful. I'm hoping to get an internship down at the Mote Marine Center rehabilitating dolphins and seals one of these days, and I currently volunteer for a vet who rehabilitates wildlife. I love that sort of stuff~
